Dong Ho folk paintings proposed to be recognized by UNESCO

The dossier on the "Dong Ho folk paintings" has been completed by the Bac Ninh Provincial Authorities and proposed to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for submission to the Prime Minister this March.

The dossier on the "Dong Ho folk paintings" has been completed by the Bac Ninh Provincial Authorities and proposed to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for submission to the Prime Minister this March. As planned, it will be sent to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to be added to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

The Dong Ho folk paintings, originated from Dong Ho Village in Thuan Thanh District of Bac Ninh province, bears historical, cultural, and artistic values. Previously, Dong Ho Village had 17 families making the paintings. After 1945, Dong Ho, together with Hang Trong and Kim Hoang folk paintings were at risk of disappearance.

In Dong Ho village, only three artisans' families are still making folk paintings. By 1990, some artisans collected old paintings and engravings to restore the Dong Ho folk paintings.
